Cut Canyon Ranch - New June 2007
A Working Ranch That Provides Excellent Recreation as Well
The ranch is located in the northwestern part of Sheridan County in the Nebraska Panhandle.  The landscape is very unique for Nebraska, with the ranch headquarters looking out over Beaver Wall.  The ranch consists of 4,355 acres (includes 230 lease acres) of pastureland and 425 acres of hay land.  The pastureland is covered with hard grasses.  Juniper tree covered draws and canyons make the ranch perfect for winter range and protection for livestock and wildlife.  There are some pine-covered hills that are perfect for the wildlife in the area.  One large flat bottom canyon that runs two miles north, filled with hardwood trees, is where the whitetail deer accumulate.  The ranch is watered on a community pipeline with tanks located throughout the pastures and corrals.  There are several dams, and a seasonal creek on the property.

The Spring turkey season, for the Merriman Turkey, is phenomenal on this ranch.  It also comes with landowner permits for elk.  The elk herds in the Pine Ridge area are growing each year.

Another unique aspect of the ranch is the abundance of fossils.  It has fossils from the Cretaceous Marine (90 million years ago) era on the north part of the ranch, and Oligocene (35 million years ago) era on the south side of the ranch.  Fossils that have been found on the ranch include three different types of Mosasaur, Elasmosaur, Xiphactimus, Enchodus, fexox, other small fish, shark teeth. Hyacodon Nebrascnesis, Oreodons, and other small mammals.  Giant septarian nodules which contain calcite crystals are in great abundance.

The service town for the ranch is Chadron, with a population of over 5,000.  Twenty-one miles to the southwest, Chadron serves a large trade area, offers all services including a hospital, airport with direct flights from Denver, and a state college.  The county seat is in Rushville, Nebraska approximately 30 miles from the ranch.  There are 3 large sale barns within 50 miles of the ranch where cattle consistently top the market nationwide each week.

On a clear day, from the ranch you can see the Black Hills of South Dakota, which is an hour and 45 minutes away.  Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, and numerous other tourist destinations are all right there including Prairie Wind Casino only 30 miles from the ranch and Deadwood Casino, both in South Dakota.  Fort Robinson, near Crawford, NE is jus 50 miles away with gorgeous views and tons of history.

One’s first impression is the rugged beauty of the majestic rock formations: deep canyons with Pine, Juniper, Cottonwood and Ash trees; and panoramic views of the Nebraska Pine Ridge region to the south and the South Dakota Black Hills to the north.  Upon closer inspection one will appreciate the high quality rangeland on the Cut Canyon Ranch.

This area of Northwest Nebraska and Southwest South Dakota is known for its amazing “hardland” grass.  The limiting factor for livestock operations is inadequate water resources on most ranches in this area.  The community water district and the pipeline water with tanks has taken care of this problem.

“Pride of Ownership” is the best way to describe the management and custodial care that the owners display throughout their operation.
